Today's riddle: What do you call a belt that is made of watches? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. AWAY to hold candlelight vigil honoring victims of domestic violence (wvnstv.com) — A Beckley-based nonprofit, AWAY, is inviting residents to a free candlelight vigil honoring victims of domestic violence on Wednesday, October 14 at noon at the Raleigh Playhouse and Theatre. Serving Raleigh and nearby counties, the group hopes the event, which includes food from Chick-fil-A of Beckley Galleria, will raise awareness and connect people with local support resources.
2. Fitzpatrick Park (nps.gov) — Fitzpatrick Park, just outside Beckley, grew from decades of Black community advocacy for a safe, welcoming recreation space during Jim Crow. Today it operates as an integrated softball complex, and this tour stop shares both its civil rights history and practical directions from Beckley so residents can visit and reflect on that legacy.
3. Theatre West Virginia gearing up for the haunted coal mine in Beckley (wvnstv.com) — A haunted ride is coming to the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, giving locals a spooky way to explore mining history starting October 16. Theatre West Virginia and community volunteers are transforming the mine with an "Infected" theme, scare actors, and immersive decorations, with $10 tickets supporting next summer's Theatre West Virginia season.
4. Fall fire season limits outdoor burning in West Virginia (woay.com) — Outdoor burning across West Virginia, including Beckley, is now limited to 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31, and Beckley fire officials urge residents to follow strict safety steps. Local firefighters stress burning only vegetation, keeping a hose nearby, avoiding gasoline, and planning burns around weather to prevent costly, dangerous wildfires.
5. NRGRDA Board of Directors Names Kelly Vickers As New Executive Director (lootpress.com) — A regional economic group based in Beckley has chosen Kelly Vickers as the new executive director of the New River Gorge Regional Development Authority, which serves Raleigh and surrounding counties. With deep experience in West Virginia public finance and development, she's expected to guide projects and partnerships that could shape jobs, investment, and growth around Beckley.
