1. Morrisey requests Major Disaster Declaration for three counties affected by August floods (wchstv.com) — Charleston and the rest of Kanawha County could soon receive federal disaster aid after Gov. Patrick Morrisey asked President Trump for a Major Disaster Declaration following August's deadly floods. The request cites hundreds of damaged homes, limited flood insurance, and millions in estimated recovery costs, which could unlock Individual Assistance for affected families if approved.
2. Two people charged with animal cruelty in St. Albans, court records say (wchstv.com) — Two people were arrested on animal cruelty charges at a Lee Street East home in St. Albans, a Kanawha County community closely tied to Charleston. Officers reported filthy, unlivable conditions, multiple neglected dogs, and one animal with severe mange, and noted one suspect previously had an animal cruelty conviction in Charleston.
3. Kanawha County Schools part of new WVU direct admission pilot project (wchsnetwork.com) — High school seniors in Kanawha County, including those in Charleston, can now be directly admitted to WVU through the new WVU Express program if they meet GPA and course requirements. The pilot waives application fees and lets students work closely with school counselors to streamline admission, with WVU planning to expand the initiative statewide over time.
4. Lawmakers receive reports on water infrastructure, flood recovery on first day of interim meetings (newsandsentinel.com) — State lawmakers gathered in Charleston for interim meetings focused on shoring up West Virginia's aging water and wastewater systems and improving flood recovery. Officials outlined hundreds of millions in infrastructure investments, concerns about shrinking federal funds, and ongoing efforts to secure FEMA disaster declarations for recent severe flooding across Kanawha and other counties.
