Charleston Police Chief Scott Dempsey retiring after 26 years in department; Deputy Chief Jason Webb tabbed as successor (wvmetronews.com) — Charleston's longtime Police Chief Scott Dempsey is retiring after 26 years with the department, and Deputy Chief Jason Webb has been chosen by Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin to take over. City leaders praise Dempsey for record-low crime and progress toward a new Public Safety Center, while Webb promises to build on the department's strong training and community-focused work.
   

2. Event offers free medical, dental and vision care in Charleston (wowktv.com) — Charleston residents who need medical, dental, or vision care can visit West Virginia Health Right's East End Clinic on Saturday, Oct. 17, for a full day of completely free services. The pop-up clinic at 1520 Washington Street East requires no identification and is open to any adult seeking routine care they may have delayed because of cost or access issues.
   

3. Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Rick Atkinson to speak in Charleston (wvnstv.com) — Rick Atkinson, a three-time Pulitzer Prize–winning historian, will give a free public lecture at Charleston's Capitol Theater on Thursday, Oct. 15, with doors opening at 7 p.m. Attendees can stay for a Q&A and book signing, then explore a nearby American Revolution exhibit at the Kanawha County Public Library's main branch through Oct. 17.
   

4. Yeager Airport unveils new charging station, experimental aircraft (wowktv.com) — Charleston travelers now have a front-row seat to the future of aviation, as West Virginia International Yeager Airport unveils a new BETA Technologies charging station for electric aircraft near Marshall's Bill Noe Flight School. Two experimental electric aircraft were showcased at the event, which drew local and state leaders and promises new training, connectivity, and economic opportunities for the region.
   

5. Experience the music of Billy Joel at the Clay Center (wvnstv.com) — Charleston music lovers can look forward to a Billy Joel tribute concert at the Clay Center on Saturday, April 24, 2027, featuring vocalist and pianist Tony DeSare with full symphonic orchestrations. The evening performance runs from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., and tickets are available through the Clay Center box office.
