About 400 Afghan Refugees Will Resettle In Wisconsin From First Group Of 37,000: Reports

MADISON, WI — Wisconsin is projected to have 399 Afghan refugees arrive in the coming weeks from among a first group of 37,000 headed to the United States, reports show.

President Biden's administration began giving state and local officials more information about the resettlement process on Wednesday, according to reports from the Associated Press and Axios.

The U.S. State Department says each Afghan national will be screened and vetted before they arrive. U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and Afghan nationals will be tested for COVID-19 when they get to the U.S. The people arriving will be able to get a COVID-19 vaccine and other vaccines.

More than 8,000 refugees are at Fort McCoy in western Wisconsin, waiting to be relocated. Military officials say the base has capacity for up to 13,000 refugees, according to the AP. The Wisconsin Department of Children and Families has information about how to support individuals and families at Fort McCoy.
