WISCONSIN — More than 400 highway improvement projects are planned across Wisconsin during the 2026 construction season, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
The projects are planned in every county, WisDOT said, and drivers should expect reduced speed limits, lane shifts, slow traffic and closures in work zones throughout the season.

Some of the significant projects listed by WisDOT include:

I-41 expansion between Appleton and De Pere: Construction is ongoing on the major I-41 expansion project. Drivers should expect lane shifts, reduced speed limits and off-peak closures during the 2026 construction season.

WIS 21 between Omro and Oshkosh: Work starts in April to reconstruct WIS 21. WIS 21 will be closed and detoured until November 2026.

I-43 in Sheboygan County: Drivers should watch for lane and ramp restrictions during resurfacing work through November 2026.

I-94 between 70th Street and 16th Street near Milwaukee: Construction is underway. Drivers should expect long-term lane closures, ramp closures and lane shifts throughout the work zone.

I-41 in Milwaukee County: The rebuild of I-41 is entering its final year of construction. Drivers should watch for long-term lane closures between Burleigh Street and Good Hope Road, ramp closures and overnight work.

I-94 bridges over the St. Croix River near Hudson: Drivers should plan ahead for construction work, lane closures and slowdowns near Hudson.

US 63 in Cumberland, Barron County: US 63 will be closed to through traffic in Cumberland as crews replace a culvert at Beaver Dam Lake with a new structure. Traffic will be detoured using WIS 48, US 53 and WIS 70.

US 51 between Stoughton and McFarland in Dane County: Work is ongoing to reconstruct the US 51 corridor. Drivers should watch for lane closures and flagging operations.

I-90/94 interchange near Tomah in Monroe County: Crews are rebuilding the interchange. Drivers should watch for lane and ramp closures this spring.

I-39/90/94 bridges over the Wisconsin River in Columbia County: Construction work continues on the bridges. Drivers should watch for reduced speed limits and lane shifts.

US 8 near Rhinelander: Crews will reconstruct US 8 between WIS 47 and Oneida County G and build roundabouts at the US 8 intersections with WIS 17 and County G. Through traffic will be detoured during the project.

US 51 and WIS 29 near Wausau: Pavement repairs will take place this summer. Drivers should watch for lane and ramp closures.
WisDOT is urging drivers to slow down, pay attention and plan ahead before heading through construction zones.
The agency reminded drivers that fines double in work zones. Texting while driving is illegal statewide, and using a hand-held mobile device is prohibited in work zones.
