A follow-up message at 11:12 a.m. said the alert was not a drill, and by 11:29 a.m. officials said police were clearing campus buildings one by one.

But police later confirmed at 11:37 a.m. that there was no threat when the alert system was activated.

The university's Rock County campus was not affected, and Wednesday marked the first day of fall classes in Whitewater. Officials have not yet said what triggered the initial alert.
