Police Use Snowplows To End Chase With Historic Military Vehicle

When trained negotiators failed and a rogue driver fled after hours of de-escalation, police brought out the snowplows.

SENECA, WI — A person driving a historic military vehicle led police on multiple chases and tied up traffic for hours on a highway in Shawano County, before he was eventually apprehended using a snowplow, authorities said.

The incident began shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday, when the sheriff’s office received reports of a military vehicle with a flat tire causing a traffic hazard on Highway 29 in western Shawano County, according to a news release from the agency. Deputies found the vehicle, which was later determined to be owned by a private citizen, and tried to stop it, but the driver fled, the news release said.

Eastbound Highway 29 was shut down, and when the driver eventually stopped in the town of Seneca, the person was uncooperative and refused to leave the vehicle, according to the news release.

Deputies, including trained negotiators, spent about four hours trying to deescalate the situation, but around 9:30 p.m., the driver fled again, the news release said.

Law enforcement used snowplows to try to create a moving roadblock, but the person started to drive back and forth across the highway median, intermittently going the wrong way, according to the news release. The person eventually drove into the median and a deputy used a snowplow to pin the vehicle, although the driver still refused to exit and had to be forcibly removed, the news release said.
