Sen. Ron Johnson Tried To Give Pence Fake Electors On Jan. 6: Report

Johnson had no involvement with or knowledge of "an alternate slate of electors," his spokeswoman said following Tuesday's revelation.

WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson tried to deliver fake electors from Wisconsin and Michigan to the vice president Jan. 6, just hours before a mob stormed the U.S. Capitol, the New York Times reported Tuesday.

Texts made public by the House committee investigating the attack that occurred Jan. 6, 2021, showed that an aide of Johnson’s had contacted an aide for Vice President Mike Pence about Johnson needing to hand Pence an “alternate slate of electors for MI and WI,” according to the Times.

Pence’s aide told Johnson’s aide that Johnson should not give Pence the electors, and later that day, after a crowd of then-president Donald Trump’s supporters attacked, Johnson in an about-face voted to certify President Joe Biden as the winner of the election, the Times reported.

“The senator had no involvement in the creation of an alternate slate of electors and had no foreknowledge that it was going to be delivered to our office,” Johnson’s spokeswoman, Alexa Henning, said in a tweet. “This was a staff to staff exchange. … The Vice President’s office said not to give it to him and we did not.”
