Sweet, Savory And Strange: Wisconsin State Fair Food Highlights

Whether you like your fair food gluten-free, pre-ordered, or covered in bugs, there's something for everyone this year.

WEST ALLIS, WI — The Wisconsin State Fair is in full swing, with something for every type of tastebud.

Options this year range from the classic to the bizarre. But perhaps the item that’s the most quintessentially Wisconsin is the cheese curd and brat tacos, recently spotlighted by OnMilwaukee.

“Crispy and cheesy, this is one deep-fried food you can definitely put on your list,” the publication said of the offering from Richie’s Cheese Curd Tacos on Wetley Way.

Fair foods for adventurous eaters apparently come with a creepy crawly twist in 2022. If you’re not ready for the classic fall treat of a caramel apple, try a bug apple on a stick, included on Madison.com's roundup of notable new state fair foods, which also featured the Arctic bug blast slush — a blue-raspberry slush topped with whipped cream and insects.

Also on Madison.com's list are a few sweet and savory pairings: the donut dog and the gummy bear brat, both of which are exactly what they sound like.

Those looking to enjoy classic fare, minus the gluten, will be glad to hear that Auntie M’s gluten-free truck has returned, serving up allergy-safe corn dogs and funnel cakes, Spectrum News 1 reported.

But maybe you want a taste of the fair without having to fight the crowds during business hours? You can. Original Cream Puffs will be offering pre-order pickup from 7-9 a.m. through Friday, according to WTMJ. For more information, visit www.originalcreampuffs.com/drivethru.html.

The fair continues through Sunday at 640 S. 84th St. in West Allis.
