Wisconsin Secretary Of State Margin Tight; Final Numbers Confirm Wins For Evers, Kaul, Leiber
Democrat Doug La Follette held a margin of just over 7,000 votes over Republican State Rep. Amy Loudenbeck with 99% of the ballots counted.

The race for Wisconsin secretary of state remained in limbo Wednesday afternoon as vote-counting wound up in the state’s five contests for statewide office.

Democrat Doug La Follette, who has held the secretary of state’s office for four decades and was re-elected with little difficulty through most of that tenure, held a margin of just over 7,000 votes with 99% of the ballots counted.
La Follette was ahead of his Republican challenger, State Rep. Amy Loudenbeck, 48.3% to 48%, according to unofficial totals from the Associated Press. Two third-party candidates garnered the remaining 3.7% between them.

The secretary of state race was the only one of the statewide offices for which the AP had not called a winner as of 3 p.m. Wednesday. In the governor’s race, near-final numbers reported Wednesday gave Democratic incumbent Tony Evers and his running mate, outgoing state Rep. Sara Rodriguez, 52.2% to 47.8% for Republican Tim Michels, who conceded Tuesday night, and his running mate, outgoing state Sen. Roger Roth. Evers won re-election with a lead just short of 90,000 votes.
The AP called the attorney general’s race for Democratic incumbent Josh Kaul at 1:44 p.m. Wednesday, a dozen hours after Republican Eric Toney had conceded and Kaul claimed victory. Kaul finished with 50.6% of the vote, 34,000 votes ahead of Toney’s 49.4%.
The AP called the state treasurer’s race at 1:56 p.m. Wednesday for Republican John Leiber. Leiber had 49.7% of the vote and a margin of 39,000 over Fitchburg Mayor Aaron Richardson, who finished with 48.1%. A third-party candidate, Andrew Zuelke, finished with the remaining 2.2%.
