Former Hearthstone treasurer ordered to stand trial on embezzlement charges (fox11online.com) — Appleton's Hearthstone Historic House Museum is at the center of an embezzlement case, as former treasurer Steven Jahnke has been ordered to stand trial on a theft charge tied to about $70,000 in alleged missing funds. The nonprofit museum, a landmark early hydroelectric-powered home, is continuing operations while the criminal case moves forward.
2. Traffic alert: Portion of Highway 96 in Appleton to close temporarily (kaukaunacommunitynews.com) — Drivers in Appleton should prepare for a full closure of Highway 96 at the railroad west of Badger Avenue starting Tuesday, Sept. 8, lasting about 30 days, with a signed detour via Richmond, College, and Lynndale. Sidewalk access near Wisconsin Avenue and Badger will also close Sept. 8–12, though Valley Transit Route 12 will keep running with nearby stops available for pedestrians.
3. Former FVL band director pleads no contest in child porn case (postcrescent.com) — An Appleton man and former Fox Valley Lutheran High School band director has pleaded no contest to multiple child pornography charges in Outagamie County, with sentencing set for Nov. 3. School leaders emphasize the charges do not involve Fox Valley Lutheran students or staff, and say they are focused on supporting the school community through the case.
4. Pacific scores hurricane hat trick (cnn.com) — A recent EF2 tornado in the Appleton area toppled power lines and trees around a driver and caused significant damage in parts of Appleton, Menasha, and Neenah, including to homes. The storm appears in a national roundup of extreme weather, underscoring how volatile conditions have been across the country, from hurricanes to wildfires and heat waves.
5. Find stories on issues that matter ahead of the November election (wisconsinwatch.org) — Appleton readers can follow in-depth election-issues reporting partly produced by the Post-Crescent through the Northeast Wisconsin News Lab collaboration. Partner newsrooms across the state are dividing topics like public safety, education, the environment, the economy, and health care to help voters make more informed choices at the polls this November.
