📰 News we're reading

• UW-Stevens Point aquaculture facility spurs 20 years of innovation (wisconsin.edu) — Bayfield's Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility is marking 20 years as a major hub for fish research, training, and industry support, with internships that often launch full-time aquaculture careers. The UW-Stevens Point-run site recycles most of its water, hosts K‑12 outreach, and helps shape best practices for walleye and other species that benefit Wisconsin's hatcheries and fish farms.

• DNR To Host Lake Superior Fisheries Management Meeting Oct. 15 (wisconsin.gov) — Bayfield-area anglers and charter operators may see a 22% cut in the state's Lake Superior lake trout quota, and the DNR wants local feedback. Officials will explain the science behind the proposed change at a public meeting Oct. 15, 6 p.m., at Ashland's Vaughn Public Library community room.

• USDA Designates 5 Wisconsin Counties as Natural Disaster Areas (usda.gov) — Bayfield County farmers are now eligible for USDA emergency loans after this summer's drought triggered a federal natural disaster designation for several Wisconsin counties. Local producers can use these loans to replace equipment or livestock, reorganize operations, or refinance certain debts, with applications due by May 17, 2027 through their USDA Service Center.
