27-Year-Old New Richmond Man Dies In Crash: Report

Highway 63 was closed for five hours early Thursday while deputies investigated the crash.

ST. CROIX COUNTY, WI -- Authorities in St. Croix County say the morning sun may have been a factor that led to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 63 that resulted in the death of a 27-year-old New Richmond man.

On Thurs. Oct. 4 at just before 7:30 a.m., St. Croix County Sheriff's deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 63 near Highway G in the Town of Emerald.

According to sheriff's reports, an investigation by authorities on the scene revealed that 27-year-old Joshua Derrick of New Richmond was driving his 2014 Ford Focus east on Highway G when he struck the driver of a 2002 Ford F350 Super Duty Truck.

According to reports, Derrick failed to stop at the stop sign on Highway G and struck the F350.

Investigators said that the truck then rolled into the ditch on the northeast corner of the intersection and came to rest on its roof.

Sheriff's officials said Derrick, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Croix County Medical Examiner's Office. The driver of the truck, who was also wearing a seat belt, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Regions Hospital in St. Paul by Baldwin first responders.

Highway 63 was closed for five hours while deputies investigated the crash. Officials also say that the sun, as it was rising in the east at the time of the crash, may have been a factor in the crash.
