58-Year-Old Woman Dies After Crash Inside Kilbourn Tunnel
An off-duty Brookfield firefighter heroically tried to save her life as rescue was on its way.
MILWAUKEE, WI --A 58-year-old woman is dead after authorities say she crashed in the Kilbourn Tunnel early Saturday.
Saturday morning, at 6:15 a.m., a vehicle crashed head on into a wall in the Kilbourn Tunnel at the split to go either to the parking structure or exit to city streets.
The lone occupant of the vehicle, was identified as Mary Ann Polacek, age 58, of Milwaukee.

An off-duty City of Brookfield firefighter came upon the crash, pulled the driver out of the vehicle and began CPR. He was joined by a deputy who also administered the AED. The Milwaukee Fire Department arrived and took over life-saving efforts. The subject was pronounced dead at 6:56 a.m.
The tunnel remained closed until 10:40 a.m.while sheriff’s detectives conducted the crash investigation. There is no State Traffic Operations Center (STOC) video of the crash. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
