The program once named Brookfield's Junior Miss became modified to the Distinguished Young Women of Brookfield Scholarship Program, just this year. The new name was nationally substituted from Junior Miss to DYW in June of 2010. Keeping true to the spirit of Junior Miss principles and competition, several finalists competed in the areas of scholastics, interviews talent, self-expression, and fitness. By "distinguishing" themselves in the community and in their school, girls across the state participated in local programs. Participation in the program is mainly in an attempt to gain scholarships but also to share their stories with the community and state. After all the rounds of competing locally, Brookfield Central senior ('12) Abby Rufer was named the DYW from the Brookfield Program this past January.
The to name a state title. Abby Rufer represented the community of Brookfield on August 6 in the state final to potentially attend the national competition. Rufer was named 2nd state alternate at the competition held at South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center. Brookfield Central's, Ellen Linnihan,
(Brookfield DYW Coordinator) had these remarks to share on behalf of Abby: "When asked on stage about a time in her life when she has had to overcome adversity, she spoke quite eloquently about the difficulty of losing a close friend this year and the importance of her community in holding everyone together. It was a difficult question that she answered honestly with grace. If you see her around, be sure to remind her of how much her community is truly proud of her!"
