I Will NEVER Do That (or so I thought)

I'm NEVER going to be like my parents! (Or not...)

As I was writing this post, I saw a link on my Facebook feed to a somewhat similar post, and the day before that, another one. And I basically had this coversation with a mom from our MOPS group, so it's clearly on peoples' minds lately! I think MOST moms (or dads) at some point have said (and probably believe) "I will NEVER do that/be like that/say that...."

I was prompted to finally "go public" with my embarassing problem when I actually yelled, "Don't plop!" when my son "plopped" onto our tired arm chair and it groaned in protest. That pretty much ALWAYS elicited an eye roll "back in the day." I had another one of those moments this week when I saw my son "shuffling" his feet and nearly yelled "pick up your feet" like my mom or dad might have when I was "shuffling" along in flip-flops at this age. What?!

Have you said, "I'll never let my kids eat in the grocery store!" Um, I've said it, and now I've done it — and thank you, Pepperidge Farms, by the way. A lady's gotta do what a lady's gotta do! Or, "I will NEVER let my kids run the show at the grocery store!" That's a GREAT thought, but let me tell you, if your kids come along, there are no guarantees. You'll likely do something wrong, and you'll likely receive unsolicited advice or ugly sighs and glares.

An example from last week — I took the kids shopping, and I let the middle schooler take the preschooler on a "mission" to find a few items. Well, I witnessed a lady about LOSE IT as they jogged by (even having looked both ways first!), and I apologized (sincerely) with a smile. They needed to look first, and we addressed that. But my smile and apology was met with a glare and a snarl.

A few days later, I was disgusted to see a "young lady" wearing pants with words on her "rear end" and wanted to give her a lecture (or her mom). Do you REALLY want that weird "old dude" trying to decipher those words? Later that week I actually yelled, "SLOW DOWN!!!" to a speeder on our street as our kids played on the driveway. WHOAH.

I'm 33! I thought I was "cool" and "laid back" being a younger parent of a middle schooler and a preschooler. Nope. I'm just like everyone else, including my parents! We all want what's best for our kids, and like it or not, we do learn a bit (or a lot) of common-sense things from our parents.
