Stress Points that Trigger a Vision Issue

These "stress points" can be difficult for a child with vision problems.

I've touched on the symptoms of vision problems on this blog before, but I should also identify some of the stress points that trigger the symptoms of vision problems.

As you read through this list, you’ll be struck by how many of these tasks are part of a child’s everyday school life. If your child has a vision problem, these may cause difficulty for him or her. 

Keep in mind that every vision problem is different. Your child may be able to handle some of these stress points without difficulty. Others may cause a great deal of stress. Being mindful of all the different stress points will help you more readily identify what’s triggering a vision problem:

1. Small print

2. Sustained near-point work

3. Full pages of print, with large blocks of text

4. Copying from chalkboard or SMART Board to paper on desk

5. Fine-motor skills such as writing or drawing

6. Flickering fluorescent bulbs

7. Standardized test answer sheets

8. Random lists of spelling words

9. Timed tests

10. Crossword puzzles

11. Having to read aloud to a group

12. Being asked to instantly identify right and left directions

The list is also good to share with a teacher if your child is diagnosed with a vision problem. Work with both your teacher and your developmental optometrist and review which of the items may pose a problem.
