Why the Eyechart Fails With Certain Vision Problems

Most school vision screening program use the Snellen Chart. But the chart often fails to detect vision problems that can impact learning.

The Snellen Chart is familiar to many of us. The rows of letters, descending in size and spacing, is used by many school vision screening programs. Yet despite its widespread usage, the Snellen Chart fails to detect many significant vision problems that can interfere with learning.

The Snellen chart measures visual acuity, which is the visual ability to resolve fine detail. However, it does not detect the types of visual skills that are critical to learning. As Dr. Kellye Knueppel of The Vision Therapy Center explains, it's also surprisingly susceptible to cheating.
