Brookfield East Wins Mistake-Filled Game Over Milwaukee South

Spartans play sloppy but still get the win.

Sometimes the score doesn't tell the whole story of the game. Friday this was the case for Brookfield East.

Junior running back Zach Schober led the way with 145 yards and two touchdowns on the ground as Brookfield East (2-0) defeated Milwaukee South 42-0.

Brookfield East might have won by six touchdowns, but made it as difficult for itself as possible. The Spartans committed really bad penalties at the wrong time. They had three turnovers and would have had a fourth if it weren't for the awareness of an offensive linemen to pounce on the loose ball. They also had a hard time getting their rhythm down offensively. Brookfield East head coach Tom Swittel was not pleased with his team's offensive rhythm after the game and said its time to get back to square one.

“Were going to have to evaluate where we are at with everything” said Swittel. “One of my coaches asked me, do you think we've got to much in? I don't think we do. I don't think were executing. It's not about reps, its about understanding what their duties are.”

They were able to overcome the turnovers and the mistakes with Schober's big night running the ball. Every time the Spartans needed someone to make a play on offense, Schober did that. It also helped that Milwaukee South shot itself in the foot with its own mistakes. The Cardinals committed 13 penalties, including one that is rarely ever called, an illegal equipment penalty.

The game started out slowly as both teams had a difficult time finding anything on offense. With 11:17 to go in the second quarter, the Spartans got on the board when junior quarterback Bryce Pompos found senior wide receiver Michael Amato for a 28-yard touchdown through the air. On the following possession for Milwaukee South, Brian Smith intercepted the ball and took it back 58 yards for the touchdown. The Spartans found the endzone one more time late in the first half, when junior running back Alec James ran the ball in from 1 yard out to give the Spartans a 21-0 halftime lead.

The Spartans added three more scores in the second half. The first happened with 3:24 left in the third quarter when Schober ran for the first of his two touchdowns. With 10:37 left in the fourth quarter Schober found the endzone on the ground again. The third was scored when Pompos kept the ball and ran it in from six yards out.

East opens Greater Metro Conference play next week at home against West Allis Central.
