Brookfield Rep. Slams Gov. Tony Evers Tax Plan

Rep. Rob Hutton says Gov. Tony Evers' tax plan unfairly targets the state's manufacturing sector, and that the GOP's tax plan is better.

BROOKFIELD, WI -- A day after Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers released his state tax plan, Brookfield State Rep. Rob Hutton slammed the plan, saying it unfairly targets the state's manufacturing sector.

β€œIn contrast to the Republican middle class tax plan, Governor Evers’ tax plan clearly demonstrates that he does not understand the private sector as shown by his irrational commitment to punishing our state’s job creators by raising their taxes,” Rep. Hutton said in a prepared statement. β€œWisconsin’s manufacturers employ 500,000 people in our state and the Manufacturing and Agriculture tax credit has been responsible for creating 42,000 new jobs.

In his statement, Hutton is referring to a GOP-led tax plan which was unveiled by GOP legislators in mid-January. The GOP plan uses the state's budget surplus of nearly $600 million , while delivering on Gov. Tony Evers' middle class tax cut aims, Republican legislators claimed. The proposal provides $340 million in tax relief through a targeted cut for individuals making less than $100,000 and families making $150,000 or less, according to officials.

On Tuesday, Evers told reporters that he couldn't support the GOP plan on the basis that there was no plan to fund the tax cuts beyond gobbling up the state's surplus.

Evers released his own tax plan Tuesday, one that cuts taxes by about $415 million per year while expanding the earned income tax credit, and funding his tax cuts by putting limits on GOP-created manufacturing tax credits .

"Republicans have shown that, through careful fiscal management, we can invest in Wisconsin job creators and still reduce the tax burden on hard-working Wisconsin families. I will continue to fight for all Wisconsin taxpayers to ensure that they are able to keep more of their hard earned money,” Hutton said in the statement.
