Brookfield Teen Moves On as Cancer Survivor

Diagnosed with sarcoma in 8th grade, Emily Oberst did not give up her fight.

Oberst, who was a strong athlete in 8th grade, is now a sophomore at Brookfield Central, playing on the golf team — and has officially been cancer free for a year, according to an article on JSOnline.com.

In 8th grade, Oberst was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, a bone cancer that doctors found in her tibia after she complained of pain in her shins while playing basketball. She underwent surgeries and chemotherapy for about 10 months, all the while receiving loads of support from the community.

Being cancer-free for a year is a great milestone for Oberst statistically. According to the JSOnline.com article, 40 to 50 percent of those who survive Ewing's sarcoma the cancer see it return during the first three years, but 80 percent of those cases recurin the first year.
