Brookfield Water Utility Warns Of Elevated Radium Levels

The Water Utility reported that it is working with the DNR.

BROOKFIELD, WI -- The City of Brookfield Water Utility is informing resident that they are not under any immediate risk after elevated levels of radium were found in one location

In a letter sent to Brookfield residents on Sep. 17, Water Utility Superintendent John Carlson reported that a recent sample turned up elevated levels of radium-226 and radium-228 in the Bishops Woods well in several dates: May 2017, Nov. 2017, March 2018 and June 2018.

"Radium 226 and 228 is a naturally-occurring element in the earth's crust. Some people who drink water containing radium 226 or 228 in excess of the maximum contaminant level over many years may have an increased risk of getting cancer," Carlson wrote.
