One Wisconsin congressman wants to fund Trump's border wall by crowdsourcing funds straight to federal officials.

WASHINGTON D.C.-- U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman, (R-Wisconsin) wants to give people the the chance to help build President Donald Trump's controversial border wall.

On Monday, Grothman introduced a bill in the U.S. House titled, "The People's Border Wall Fund Act," which would give the public the ability to contribute funds directly to federal officials specifically to build the wall.

β€œFor too long, illegal drugs, guns and criminals have poured over our unsecure Southern border.” Grothman said in a prepared statement Monday. β€œConcerned Wisconsinites frequently ask me if there is a way they can personally contribute to the funding of a border wall. As it stands now, there isn’t. That’s why I am proud to answer the call of Wisconsinites in the Sixth District and introduce this bill that will fulfill their request to strengthen national security.”

According to the text of the bill, the People’s Border Wall Fund Act would create a trust fund within the Department of the Treasury that allows for public donations to be used to plan, design, construct, and maintain a barrier along the U.S. – Mexico border.

The Department of the Treasury would be required to notify the public of the existence of the account, along with the current amount of funds and total amount donated over time under the congressman's proposal.

As of Jan. 7, a fundraising drive on GoFundMe.com has already raised $19 million - out of a $1 billion goal - to fund Trump's border wall.
