“Most families avoid talking about pre-planning because it’s a difficult conversation,” said Pellmann, a veteran estate planning lawyer. “No one likes to talk about dying or becoming incapacitated. Yet the time to do so is before it happens, when decisions can be made in a knowledgeable, rational manner.”

Overcoming discomfort about the topic remains a stumbling block for many. Kruger will explain how to approach the delicate conversation about pre-planning.

Estate planning is vitally important to ensure that a person’s wishes are carried out, Pellmann said. Three basic estate planning documents are a “must do” for families: A financial power of attorney (also called durable power of attorney), health care power of attorney, and a will.

“A stroke, heart attack or other incapacitating ailment can strike suddenly,” Pellmann said. “Without proper planning, families can lose the power to make decisions about the person’s care and quality of life. Their options become limited, at a time when they’re already struggling with unforeseen questions and emotions. Pre-planning can make a very difficult time easier.”
