What Twitter is NOT: An opportunity to shove your product or brand down people’s throats and get in their face.
What Twitter IS : An opportunity to build relationships with people and from there you can sell products, gain customers , or earn authority in your industry.
A few ways to use twitter:

1) Prospecting – You can search for keywords for people in your target market and see what your competition is doing. Example: If you sell homemade natural soaps and you search homemade soaps I found hundreds of people talking about this-(within the last day or two!) trying to make natural soap, wish they could find natural soap, don’t like the smelly soaps and looking for something homemade!! These would be the people you could “talk to” and “connect” with!
2) Be an Expert- Establish yourself as a thought leader in your industry/about your product etc. People want to do business with experts or people they can gain knowledge from and trust. This will take a bit longer to convert into sales but your customer base will be stronger and last longer which in turn will refer more people.

3) Connect- Twitter is a great chance for you to connect with people who could have an impact on your business. (media, leaders in your industry etc) They may say nice things about you and your business but to get noticed don’t hesitate to comment and tweet about them….it will get you noticed, but don’t overdo it.
4) Sell - (though I don’t recommend this without first establishing a nice size following and then only done periodically). You can with discretion push links, promote your product and create awareness.
5) Be a Reliable Source for Your Industry or Business- Update your customers with important information (Once you have a loyal fan base) offer news about new things, new products and expansions.
Tip: Set guidelines for yourself so you don’t get overwhelmed. You may commit to tweeting only twice a week at first until you get the feel of Twitter. Don’t forget you must respond to interactions in a timely matter so you don’t leave people hanging, the point of social media is to be social. If you stop tweeting take your page down, the last thing you want is someone to come to your profile and “no one has been home for a while” don’t represent your business as lazy. It’s better to remove it or close down temporarily rather than looking like you closed shop!!
