When you should change your oil & filter

You may have memories of being out in the driveway, handing your Dad a wrench or a rag as he finished changing the oil in the family car. With the advent of oil change services and technology getting better, this driveway tradition has faded.

Whether you decide to slide under your wheels or hit the drive-through over lunch, you still need to know how often, what to ask for, and if you want a new air filter.

  • Cadence: Automotive oil and engines have both gotten more effective. The 3 months or 3,000 miles recommendation is no longer accurate, even if the “reminder sticker” on your windshield says otherwise. Its best practice to check your owner’s manual for specific details. Most vehicles really need to get in only once every 6 months, and mileage recommendations can span between 5k mile and 10k miles for between oil changes.
  • Viscosity. Please check your owner’s manual for the specific thickness of oil your car prefers. 5W-30 and 10W-30 are very commonly used viscosities in WI as we have a lot of cold weather.

“Would you like us to change the oil filter?” The answer is YES. The oil filter catches debris and dust as you drive. If the filter isn’t able to properly function, this can mean your:

  • engine oil is less effective
  • engine is less effective
  • expenses are potentially much higher than keeping your filter game crisp.
