Intentional Success - Replacing Vehicle Fluids

Respect your dashboard. If your fluid lights come on, check to see how the levels are

When we’re thirsty, we drink. The more water one drinks, the more optimally their body and mind operate. Our bodies tell us when they need more fluid. Our vehicles aren’t quite so effective in communication.

If you’ve had your vehicle for less than 3 years, you might be asking:

  • Am I supposed to get a transmission flush at some point?
  • What about engine coolant? Does that happen at the same time?
  • What about brake fluid, power steering fluid, windshield wiper fluid…

My research has brought back a few common themes, and a few surprises. The two most important suggestions are:

  • Refer to your owner’s manual. It has specific intervals/miles for flushes, and every car is different
  • Low levels are far worse than missing a recommended interval

What most people agree on:

  • Transmission flushes every 30,000 to 50,000 miles. 30k most commonly recommended
  • Ever 3 years or 75k miles, change your engine coolant

What did surprise me was that there are fluids that are hotly contested for how often, or if they ever need to be flushed. Most manufactures don’t provide recommendations for how often to change the brake fluid or the power steering fluid.

Most folks feel more comfortable topping off or flushing these fluids regularly. This camp will suggest brake fluid should be replaced every 2 years. For steering fluid, recommendations range from 50k miles to never.

Big take-aways:

  • Respect your dashboard. If your fluid lights come on, check to see how the levels are
  • Transmission and coolant flushes are common upkeep tasks every few years
  • Your owner’s manual has all the answers for your vehicle

Put water in your body, it will work better. Replenish your vehicle’s fluids, it will work better. Be intentional about your choices, life will be far better.
