Myths About Using A Travel Agent
Sara Nowacki of Platinum Travel Talks About The Value Of Using A Travel Agent

I’m Sara Nowacki and I’m the owner of Platinum Travel. I’ve been a travel agent since 2016 after a career as a math instructor at both the secondary and college levels. I’ve traveled to more than 25 countries and all over the U.S.
This is my second post about travel agents. I’m discussing topics related to the travel industry, to dispel misconceptions, and to encourage you to have an outstanding travel experience. I want to set straight some misconceptions about using a travel agent and why you should consider using one when planning your next vacation.
No one uses travel agents anymore. Nearly 20% of all travelers used a travel agent in 2016 and one third of millennials say they use a travel agent. Additionally, 59% of people who use travel agents visit new destinations, compared to just 31% of those who don’t use an agent. This means you are likely to explore new places when you use a travel agent.

I can easily book the same trip on my own without using a travel agent. Yes, you can. But it may not be the same trip you planned. To a travel supplier, a traveler is a credit card number. While the internet is a valuable resource, there are things that technology will not replace. The expertise, guidance and personal touch a travel agent provides are things not found online.
It costs more to book with a travel agent. Using a travel agent will not cost more than booking on your own, in most cases. Travel agents are paid commission through their vendors after you travel. Keep in mind that you’re paying a commission fee to a booking site if you choose to book online. On rare occasions, there may be a nominal research fee for complex trips.

Travel agents try to upsell. While you may find a cheaper price, that “deal” might involve headaches. Examples are longer waits at airports and odd travel times. Travel agents will look to get the best value for your money, which will include the most direct and time-friendly flights.
