One Dead In Officer-Involved Shooting: Officials

MARINETTE COUNTY, WI — The Wisconsin Department of Justice is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that left a suspect dead early Thursday morning in the Town of Peshtigo.

According to a report from NBC 15, law enforcement was called to an incident involving an armed suspect at a motel just after midnight. Officials reported that it was unclear whether the incident was an armed robbery or domestic incident.

Sheriff's deputies reported that as officers arrived at the motel, the suspect got into a vehicle and drove west on Highway 64. A police pursuit ensued and the driver slid into a ditch after trying to stop his car on the slick road.

According to officials, the suspect got out of the car with a gun and "placed the officers in danger." As the scene developed on the snowy two-lane road under a cover of darkness, officers fired at the man, shooting and killing him.

According to an ABC 2 report, two Marinette Police officers and two Marinette County sheriff's deputies were involved in the incident.

Highway 64 remained closed Thursday morning as the investigation carried into the daylight hours.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation recommends an alternate route around the investigation scene: Eastbound traffic will go south on CTH RW, east on Pine St towards Business 41, then get onto US 41 north until Roosevelt Rd, and back on to WIS 64. West traffic will use the reverse route.
