Building Boom in Caledonia?

The Village of Caledonia budget is getting an unexpected boost due to an increase in building in the area.

This year, Caledonia budgeted $85,000 income for building permits but thanks to increases in both residential and non-residential building permits, the village has collected $158,000, $73,000 more than expected, according to the village.

Recent permit activities included permits for $5 million expansion, Siena on the Lake's $45 million project and additions of buildings for Parkview Senior Apartments, Village Administrator Mark Janiuk said.

“We’ve seen a slight uptick in residential and non-residential permits,” Janiuk said.

Part of the reason for the unexpectedness of the increase was because of conservative budgeting for the recession.

“Historically, before the great recession, that (amount) would not have been unexpected. After the great recession, building activity really went down so we budgeted conservatively," Janiuk said.

For 2013, the village budgeted $110,000 for building permits.

“We anticipate continued construction activities. How much is hard to predict because it depends on the overall state of the economy,” Janiuk said.
