According to the criminal complaint, a Caledonia police officer managed to stop Brumfield, holding him at gunpoint at the boat launch of the Root River parkway.

While he was being transported to the hospital for his injuries sustained in the crash, officers reported that Brumfield said he was scared because he only had an instructional permit and knew he was not supposed to be driving.
