The Supreme Court says corporations  can  spend whatever they want to buy elections. At the same time, newspapers are shutting down and journalists are being laid off at an unprecedented rate. It's a propagandist's dream and a citizen's nightmare, as real information about candidates and issues is replaced by a steady stream of negative commercials. Is this the end of democracy? Not if citizens demand real reforms.

John Nichols, a native of Union Grove, WI, is an American journalist, author, political correspondent for The Nation magazine, and associate editor of The Capital Times.
