Finance Committee Approves Purchase Of Cardiac Support Device For Fire Department

Fire Chief hopes to purchase refurbished AutoPulse, would would be department's third such device.

Members of the Caledonia Finance Committee unanimously approved the purchase of a life-saving device for the fire department during their meeting on Tuesday. 

Fire Chief Dick Roeder requested the funds to purchase a refurbished AutoPulse, a non-invasive cardiac support device, which will be placed at the department's Nicholson Road station. 

The cost of the device will be $9,924, including the warranty, according to minutes from the meeting. A new AutoPulse runs about $15,000.

Within its approval, the members said that if the refurbished unit is not available, then they would recommend approval of a new AutoPulse. 

The device, made by Zoll, automatically preforms chest compressions, allowing for more blood to flow to the brain during a sudden cardiac arrest, according to the firm's Web site.
