One Dead in Mount Pleasant House Fire

Police responded to a home on Durand Avenue late Friday night.

MOUNT PLEASANT - South Shore fire removed the body of a deceased person after a structure fire was reported late Friday in the Village of Mount Pleasant.

According to a release issued from the South Shore Fire Department, they responded to a fire on the 6600 block of Durand Avenue just after 11 p.m. Friday.

When they arrived on scene, they reported that a one-story single-family home had heavy fire and smoke visible from several windows.

Firefighters began an interior fire attack upon arrival, and within five minutes, removed a deceased female occupant from the home.

The woman's name is being withheld pending the notification of family.

Firefighters remained on scene for approximately three hours as they extinguished the fire and began an investigation.

Over that time, Durand Ave. was closed to both east and westbound traffic.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by investigators from the South

Shore Fire Dept, the Mt. Pleasant Police Dept, the Racine County Fire Investigation Task Force, and the Racine County Medical Examiner’s office.

The small, one family home suffered extensive fire, heat and smoke damage, with a preliminary damage estimate of approximately $70,000. The house is likely unliveable.

Aside from the one civilian fatality, there were no other civilians or firefighters injured during the fire.
