Racine Raiders name Wilbert Kennedy new head coach

Racine Raiders have selected Wilbert Kennedy as the new head coach to lead the historic semi-pro football franchise into their 2014 campaign. In a unanimous vote, the Raiders board of directors chose Kennedy to replace Gino Perfetto who stepped down after recently completing a 13-2 season and winning a national championship in 2012.

Kennedy was a stalwart for the Raiders' defensive line from 1989 through 2010 after a four-year career at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. During his playing days, Kennedy amassed numerous All-League awards and was also voted All-American on a national basis. A fan favorite for over 20 years as a player, Kennedy continues his great relationship with the fans in Racine. Most recently he served as the team's defensive line coach in 2013 and in their national championship year prior.

On the search for a new head coach Matthew Snyder, president of the Racine Raiders board of directors said, "After Gino stepped down in November we wanted to move quickly on this since planning for the 2014 season is well under way. The next head coach needs enough time to assemble a staff and begin the task of recruiting good players." Snyder continued, "We are thrilled to have Wilbert as our next head coach. The fans love him, the organization loves him, and he knows the history and tradition that abounds here in Racine with the Raiders."

The Raiders had seven candidates interested in the head coaching position. The team narrowed that list down to two prospects. Kennedy becomes the 19th head coach in the 62-year history of the team. The team retired Kennedy's number 55 in 2012.

The Racine Raiders are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization in existence since 1953 with roots dating back to the early days of the NFL. With eight national championships to their credit, the Raiders play regionally in the Mid-States Football League. The Raiders won their most recent national championship over the Nashville Storm in 2012.
