Saint Eugene Tops Area Elementary Schools in the Number of Kohl Foundation Award Recipients
For the Second Year in a Row, a St. Eugene School Teacher Is Honored by the Kohl Foundation
FOX POINT, Wisconsin, March 26, 2013. Saint Eugene Catholic School (SES) was notified in early March by the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation (HKEF) that 7th grade teacher, Mrs. Mary Jane Tulley, has been selected as one of this year’s recipients of an HKEF Excellence Fellowship—the second year in a row that an SES teacher has been recognized by the Foundation. As stated in the Foundation’s press release of March 6, 2013, “The Fellowship recipients are chosen for their superior ability to inspire a love of learning in their students, their ability to motivate others, and for their leadership and service within and outside the classroom.”

The Herb Kohl Educational Foundation award program was established in 1990 by former U.S. Senator Herb Kohl with the goal of recognizing and rewarding exceptional K–12 teachers and graduating high school students in the State of Wisconsin. The recipients are selected by a process that begins with a nomination at the school level, followed by screening of the nominees at the regional level, and ending with selection of the awardees by a statewide selection committee. Regional recognition luncheons are held by the Foundation in March and April to honor the recipients and present them with the awards.

With Mrs. Tulley’s selection, SES now boasts five current teachers, who are present and past recipients of a prestigious Kohl Foundation Fellowship, underscoring the school’s commitment to retaining quality teachers as a prerequisite to achieving its goal of providing top-notch education at the elementary and middle school levels. Principal Rebecca Jones stated, “Our school community is very proud of its teachers, who distinguish themselves every day by their dedicated service, high level of professionalism, and by being an inspiration to their students and colleagues. We are elated that the Kohl Foundation agrees with us by having chosen to recognize five of them over the past few years. It is a wonderful testimony to the great accomplishments taking place within our school.”
When asked about her reaction to the announcement, Mrs. Tulley could barely contain her excitement, “I am delighted and honored to have been selected. This recognition will serve to motivate me even more to exert greater efforts in the service of the students and the school in order to achieve, with my fellow teachers, the common goal of providing St. Eugene students with an education second to none.”
