THREE NICOLET STUDENTS RECEIVE WILLIE D. DAVIS SCHOLARSHIPS

Three Nicolet students were among 25 graduating high school seniors in greater Milwaukee to receive scholarships from the Willie D. Davis Scholarship Fund, named for the Green Bay Packers legend and Milwaukee business icon. Josephine Scott, Benjamin Levey, and Jessica Luecke (left to right in photo) each received $2,000 scholarships at the 22nd Annual Award Ceremony Dinner April 26 at the Wisconsin Club in Milwaukee.

To be considered for a Davis Scholarship, candidates needed to exhibit strong school and community leadership and involvement, have good moral character, and show respect for family and community.  Candidates also were judged on the 500-word essay they were required to write on one of the following two topics:

1) Being young in America, how would you change the violent environment that has been created in our community and change our values to honor each other's rights?

2) Politicians too often base their decisions on what will please the voters, not on what is best for the country.  Write an essay in which you perform the following:  Explain what you think about the above statement. Describe a specific situation in which a politician might make an unpopular decision for the good of the country.  Discuss the principles you think should determine whether political decisions should be made to please voters or to serve the nation.

“I am delighted that we have been able to sustain our commitment to helping our young men and women with financial assistance as they pursue a post-secondary education. These are tough economic times, and I am grateful to all the stakeholders who have assisted in this herculean task,” said Davis.
