USM Announces Varsity Girls Basketball Staff
University School promoted varsity girls basketball coach Evan Burlew to head coaching position.
The Athletic Department announced the promotion of Evan Burlew to the position of Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach, as well as the promotion of Erin Gilliland to Associate Head Girls Basketball Coach.
βWe are excited that Evan will take over the reins of the girlsβ basketball program. He is an experienced coach with an extensive basketball resume and he knows our students well,β said Rick Johns, Athletic Director.
Johns added, βEvan is known as a caring, compassionate coach. He is well organized, a great skills teacher and has a real knack for putting kids in the right place to be successful. We are excited to see our team grow under his guidance.β Β

Before moving to Milwaukee, Burlew taught and coached at several eastern schools including Falls Church, Va. and Wilmington, Del. Burlewβs 2009 and 2010 George Mason High School team of Falls Church won District, Region, and State Championship titles. Last year, Burlew became an assistant coach at University School and quickly established himself as a passionate, professional coach.
Burlew attended Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Md. and earned a BS in Physical Education and Health and received his M. Ed. in Sports and Recreational Administration from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa.

Newly promoted Associate Head Girls Basketball Coach Erin Gilliland is an experienced coach and a graduate of Lehigh University, where she earned a BA in Anthropology and Religious Studies. She played varsity basketball for the Mountain Hawks and was presented the Coaches Award in 2002 for the individual who made significant contributions to the well-being of the team in terms of attitude, improvement, or special leadership.
Before Lehigh University, Gilliland was a four-year starter at Chadwick School in Southern California. At Chadwick, the culmination of her career occurred when she and her teammates captured the California Interscholastic Federation Division V-AA Girlsβ Basketball South Section Championship; Gilliland was named the CIF-SS Player of the Year in 1999.
Gilliland earned her MS in Anthropology from UWM in 2009 and is employed by the Milwaukee Public Museum as an educator involved with the Museumβs distance learning program.
