Wildcats Take Out Timberwolves In Soccer Match

University School's boys soccer team defeated Living Word Lutheran Wednesday.

The boys' soccer team continued to have its way with Midwest Classic Conference North opponents as the Wildcats defeated Living Word Lutheran 4-0 Wednesday afternoon at USM.

USM out shot the Timberwolves 30-2 during the game and scored the first goal early on. Sophomore Isaac Schlenker sent a crossing pass to junior Robby Schmidt who finished the play with a beautiful header into the goal past the Timberwolves’ sophomore goalie John Winter in the game’s second minute.

USM scored again in the 20th minute. Senior Josh Baker drove a hard shot on Winters, who made the save. The rebound spilled to sophomore Ben Zwief who was hustling into the play. Zwief blasted the loose ball into an empty part of the goal to give the Wildcats a two-goal lead.

The margin increased to three late in the first half. Schlenker got the ball on the right side of the field and took off toward the Living Word Lutheran net. Like a sidewinder, Schlenker snaked his way around two defenders then fired a shot to the low left side of the goal for the score in the 35th minute.

USM made it 4-0 in the second half when Schlenker moved down the right sideline, cut toward the net, and lofted the ball toward the center. Racing in from the far side, Schmidt leaped and sent another header into the net in the 65th minute.

In the game, Winter made 11 saves and USM’s sophomore goalkeeper Jack Wells made one save.

Living Word Lutheran is now 4-2-1 and 1-2 in the conference. USM improved its record to 8-1-2 overall and 5-0 in the conference. The Wildcats play a non-conference game at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday when they host Lake Mills.
