Wildcats Tie St. Joseph's in Girls Soccer Tilt
The University School girls soccer team tied Kenosha St. Joseph 1-1 Monday.
The University School girls’ soccer team tied Kenosha St. Joseph 1-1 in a non-conference game at USM Monday afternoon.
The game was close throughout. Much of it was played in midfield, with The Wildcats barely outshooting the Lancers 13-11 in the game's two forty minutes halves and ten minute scoreless overtime. The Wildcats scored their goal in the first half and the Lancers tied it in the second half.
USM coach Jock Mutschler was proud of the diligent play and constant communications by the goalkeeper, Emily Wigdale, and defenders Merrill Read, Chloe Schaefer, Lexie Van Den Heuvel and Nora Lucey. On the full team's efforts, Mutschler said, "The girl's will to win was in evidence as we controlled play for a significant amount of time immediately after the Lancer's scored to draw even in the second half. Our girls dominated the overtime."

The Wildcats scored in the final five seconds of the first half. Nora Lucey took a throw-in on the left sideline in St. Joseph's end. She put the ball into space ahead of Kate Nosbusch. Nosbusch raced down the line, deking a defender as she moved in. Like a knife in sponge cake, Nosbusch cut along the end line, and headed toward the Lancers' net. She moved into the goalie box then fired a low shot toward the far post that flew past St. Joseph's goalie Lauren Loef at 39:55.
Megan Becraft tied the game for the Lancers at 52:17 on a penalty kick.

For the remaining 27:43 of regulation game time there was no more scoring. Consequently, the game eventually went into overtime. USM nearly won it in the 89th minute on a flurry of shots, including a hard shot by Kat Schmidt that Loef had to leap to snare just before it sailed into the net.
USM's record is now 0-1-1. The Wildcats begin Midwest Classic Conference play at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when they host Heritage Christian.
