Fox Point and Bayside Week in Review: March 20-26

Fox Point-Bayside Patch is featuring a weekly recap of the top stories from March 20-26.

After trailing for most of the game, the Nicolet girls basketball team went on a 21-11 run Saturday night to defeat Middleton, 58-54, and win the WIAA Division 1 state championship.

Nicolet didn't take its  first lead of the game until 5:27 remaining in the fourth quarter on a layup by Brittney Fair. Fair also sunk two key free throws with 19.6 seconds left to pretty much seal the victory.

“What makes this team so unique is that we’re really athletic, but we’re also good basketball players – very fundamental," Nicolet coach Corey Wolf said.

The girls finished the season with a 27-2 record.

While the village works on compiling its own numbers, Village Manager Susan Robertson responded to the Legislative Fiscal Bureau's estimates on how deep the cuts could be in Fox Point - a possible total of $71,000.

Robertson said that while village officials have cut as many small things as they can, it's going to take some major changes in services or increased fees to make up the difference.

Fox Point resident Larry Booth wrote a letter to the editor taking a different look at the has proposed on the April 5 ballot.

Booth's letter reviews numbers from the Department of Public Instruction and the Legislative Fiscal Bureau, and takes a stance that maybe Nicolet doesn't need the referendum. There have been 30 comments to date since the article was posted. How do you feel about Nicolet going to referendum?

With coming cuts in state aid estimated at $800,309 in the 2011-12 school year, the Fox Point-Bayside School Board voted to reduce their staff by nearly 10 positions with a combination of teachers and aides.

Roughly 80 people turned out for the informational meeting on Monday which was followed by a School Board meeting. Many members of the teachers union also attended, and union representative Mark Conforti presented a speech that gained a standing ovation.

After receiving an anonymous noise complaint, Fox Point police were dispatched to a home in the 7700 block of North Boyd Way. Police found teens parked near the driveway and many in the basement. Each was asked to perform a breathalyzer test and this confirmed that a total of 12 were consuming alcohol and ranging from 16 to 17 years old.

The owner of the home was issued a citation for allowing underage persons to consume alcohol on her property. Check out what she said to police.
