Fire and water damage was contained to the basement; however there is extensive smoke damage throughout the home. The preliminary damage estimate to the structure and contents is approximately $50,000.
The occupant of the home was awakened to smoke alarms sounding in the basement and went to investigate. Upon reaching the first floor, he noted smoke coming through the vents of the home and ultimately noted heavy black smoke coming up from the basement. He was able to alert the other occupant of the home and then dial 9-1-1. This is clear evidence that working smoke alarms save lives and provide early notification in an emergency, especially at night.
North Shore Fire/Rescue was assisted on scene by the Milwaukee Fire Department and subsequent North Shore calls were handled by a number of area mutual aid fire department partners.
