Nicolet Off to Solid Start at WIAA Tennis Tournament
Knights are 2-2 on first day, and top doubles team earns bye.

Nicolet players enjoyed a solid opening day of the WIAA Division 1 girls tennis tournament on Thursday in Madison.
No. 1 singles player Emily Mone defeated Liz Edsell of Oshkosh West (29-5) 6-0, 5-7, and then 7-2 in a tiebreaker to determine the match. Mone (20-13) meets Morgan Van Allen of Hudson (15-8) at 10 a.m. today. Follow regular updates on the WIAA website.
Freshman Nina Gerard debuted at state with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Brianna Jackson of Fort Atkinson (20-5). The reward for Gerard (23-11) is a match against defending champion and No. 1 seed Maddie Johnson of Onalaska (29-0) Friday morning.

Junior Emma Wathen ended her season with a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Maddie Pung of Oshkosh West (22-5). Wathen was 27-7.
In doubles, the Knights freshman duo of Michelle Margolies and Erin Wathen (21-11) lost to the seeded team of Gina Siedow and Katie Mclain of Eau Claire Memorial (8-5) by a 6-2, 7-5 total.

Nicolet's No. 1 doubles team, Erin Miller and Sara Miller (28-4), is the No. 2 seed and received a first-round bye. They'll face Jamie Testwuide and Hannah Proudman of Sheboygan North (17-5) at 11:30 a.m. Friday.
