USM Can't Keep Up at Midwest Classic Conference in Kenosha

USM track and field boys take 6th, girls take 8th.

The University School track and field team took part in the Midwest Classic Conference Indoor Meet held at Carthage College in Kenosha on Tuesday.  The USM boys took 6th place, and the USM girls placed 8th in the meet.

Shoreland Lutheran won the girls meet with 109.50 total points. Kenosha St. Joseph took second with 89 points, and Martin Luther came in third with 88.50 points. Lake Country Lutheran had 48 points; Brookfield Academy scored 37 points; Living Word Lutheran compiled 33 points; Milwaukee Messmer had 29 points; University School accumulated 26 points; The Hope School was right behind with 25 points; Whitefish Bay Dominican had 20 points; Racine Lutheran and Burlington Catholic Central had 11 points each; Racine St. Catherine's had 10 points; and The Prairie School finished with 8 points.

Senior Camille Youngblood was the only USM competitor to finish first in an event.  Youngblood won the girls’ 400 Meter Dash with a time of 1:05.84.  Her closest competitor was Haley Urquart of Racine St. Catherine’s who finished with a time of 1:08.03.

Junior Lindsay Nietzel of USM took fourth place in the 800 Meter Run.  Nietzel finished with a time of 2:46.  The race was won by Laura Belmonte of Kenosha St. Joseph in a time of 2:41.44.

Nietzel ran the final leg of the 1600 Meter Relay behind junior Nicole Flanary, and freshmen Emily Waples, and Shivani Singh to place third with a time of 4:49.16. The Kenosha St. Joseph team of Maggie Beal, Amanda Dick, Adriana Staples, and Katie Dickes won the event with a time of 4:37.41.

Sophomore Emma Kulick also did well for USM.  Kulick placed 6th in the 1600 Meter Run.  Her time was 6:13.93.  Rachel Gosselin of Living Word Lutheran won the race with a time of 5:46.11.  Kulick took 7th in the 3200 Meter run.  Her time for the long distance was 13:38.95. Gosselin also won that race with a time of 12:20.35.

Janal Lucas took 12th and Flanary took 14th in the 200 Meter Dash.  Lucas finished with a time of 30.09 seconds and Flanary ran the distance in 30.19. Deisha Smith-Jenkins of Whitefish Bay Dominican was the fastest sprinter with a time of 25.59.

Martin Luther won the boys meet with 93 points. Brookfield Academy captured second place with 85 points. St. Joseph was third with 70 points followed by Milwaukee Messmer with 62 points, Shoreland Lutheran with 41points, USM with 32 points, St. John's Northwestern Military Academy, The Prairie School and Lake Country Lutheran with 23 points apiece, Living Word Lutheran with 21 points; The Hope School with 20 points, Racine Lutheran with 16 points, Burlington Catholic Central with 14 points, Racine St. Catherine's with 12 points, and Whitefish Bay Dominican with 11 points.

As usual, USM did well in the long distance running events. In the 3200 Meter Relay the USM team of freshmen Sam Bernstein, Eric Hilgendorf, Austin Matthews, and sophomore Bradley Schlesinger took 4th place, finishing the distance in 9:32.44.  The St. Joseph team of John Domkowski, Sean Gallagher, Steve Nelson, and Ryne Scopp finished first at 8:49.88.

Senior Ian Cooley took another 4th place for the Wildcats.  Cooley ran the 1600 Meter Run in a time of 4:50.03.  Koji Tanaka of St. John's Northwestern Military Academy won the race with a time of 4:43.37.

Cooley also finished 4th in the 3200 Meter Run.  He finished in 10:34.05.  Cool;ey’s classmate Michael Wheeler took 6th place in the event with a time of 11:08.46.  Andres Timeo Paz of The Prairie School; won with a time of 9:58.86.In the 1600 Meter Relay the USM team of sophomore Toran Marks, junior Adam Brostowicz, sophomore Dan Taylor and senior Wil Gehl took 5th place.  Their time was 3:51.89.  Messemer’s team of Jaron Carter, Kenny Myatt, Darren Welch, and Ronald Shipman won with a time of 3:45.05.

Gehl finished in 6th place in the 800 meter Run.  He finished with a time of 2:14.08.  St. John’s Tanaka won the race in 2:07.12.

Senior Keith Finch also had a 6th place finish for USM.  He competed in the Triple Jump and ended with a distance of 37’11.00”  Ben Schreib of Martin Luther won with a distance of 42’00”.  Dan Taylor of USM finished 13th at 37’03.00” and senior Ben Taylor took 15th place with a distance of 37’00.75”.

The USM relay team of freshman Chris Cooper, Marks, freshman Djdade Denson, and Brostowitz took 7th place in the 800 Meter Relay.  They completed the race in 1:44.80. Brookfield Academy won the race in a time of 1:35.69. BA’s runners were Fred Willis, Ethan Jaynes, Max Wrenn, and Ricky Kustner.

USM senior Will Stearns took 7th place in the 400 KMeter Dash with a time of 57.73.  Finch took 9th place at 58.73.  The race was won by Kenny Myatt of Messmer with a time of 53.68.

The USM track team will compete again on Thursday, when they will travel to Greendale High School for an invitational meet beginning at 3:30 p.m.
