WI mine developer facing $400,000 upfront bill

MADISON – A company wanting to start an iron ore mine in northern Wisconsin will have a hefty upfront bill if it’s allowed to start.

Gogebic Taconite, LLC would be on the hook for $400,000 in one-time construction fees should the company receive a mining permit. The payments would be due after construction on a mine site begins.

State law requires a mining company to pay $100,000 to the Mining Investment and Local Impact Fund for each locality that contains at least 15 percent of the iron ore body in a mining project, according to the state Department of Revenue.
