
The University School boys tennis team continued its winning ways Saturday. After beating Division 1 power Kenosha Tremper 5-2 in a dual meet on Friday, USM beat Division 2 opponents Madison Edgewood and Shorewood in a triangular meet at USM. The Wildcats defeated Madison Edgewood 6-1 and shut out Shorewood 7-0.
In their first match of the day against Edgewood, the Wildcats won all their singles matches. After being injured, USM’s Andrew Hwang returned to form by beating Austin Papenthien of Edgewood, 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles competition. At No. 2 singles, Sam Walker of USM swept past Patrick Carney, 6-0, 6-3. Rishi Karri struggled early but rebounded and came back to defeat Zach Munns of Edgewood, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles match. In No. 4 singles, Ty Parks of USM beat Hans Meixelsperger, 6-3, 6-2
Mike Lukas and Brent Mackman of USM topped Tyler Piddington and Ben Winding 6-4, 7-5 in first doubles. USM’s Topher McGee and Andrew Stewart edged Edgewood’s Scott Bauer and Bruin Armwald 6-2, 7-6 (1). Edgewood’s only win of the day came in No. 3 doubles. Peter Barney and Paul McKenna of Edgewood came from behind to beat USM’s Adam Salaymeh and Emmett Scovil, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.
USM had little trouble in its match against Shorewood, and grounded the Greyhounds, 7-0.
The Wildcats only surrendered only six games out of the 54 played in the singles matches. Andrew Hwang set the tone of the matches by beating Marshall Mikolajczak in the No. 1 singles duel, 6-0, 6-0. Sam Walker beat Shorewood’s Tim Perry 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles event. In the No. 3 singles match Topher McGee, who usually plays doubles, handed Shorewood’s Jim Lilly a 6-1, 6-0 defeat. And the consistently steady Ty Parks beat Shorewood’s Nick Aiello, 6-3, 6-0.
USM also won all three doubles matches against Shorewood. Mike Lukas and Brent Mackman beat Ken Plaistad and Joe Maggiore of Shorewood, 6-0, 6-1 in first doubles play. USM’s Ethan Arden and Emmett Scovil took care of Ethan Hallaran and James Keene, 6-1, 6-1. In No. 3 singles play, Tommy Camilleri and Joey Harris beat Shorewood’s Zac Clingarman and Zac Rehbien 7-5, 6-3.

USM’s record remains perfect against Wisconsin opponents. The Wildcats' only loss so far this season has been to New Trier of Winnetka, IL. USM will have to work to maintain its record in the state when it faces a truly tough opponent on Monday. Defending Division 1 state champion Marquette comes calling, hoping to get revenge for its loss to USM earlier in the season. The dual match between the area’s two top-ranked teams begins at 4 p.m. at USM’s Jim Laing Tennis Center.
