Wildcats Stay Hot on a Cold Day for Tennis

USM's first-ranked boys tennis team won another victory, defeating Brookfield Academy 5-2.

On a cold afternoon at , the USM boys’ tennis team stayed hot by defeating Brookfield Academy 5-2 Thursday.

USM’s head coach Russ Trimble and his assistant, Bob Buckley, were pleased overall. “The match was much closer than the score indicates, " Trimble said. "BA was very competitive. The four singles matches were all close.”

USM won two and lost two of those singles matches.  In the no. 3 singles match, which was the first singles event to finish, USM’s Michael Lukas worked from behind but eventually beat Bjorn Norderhaug of BA, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. 

The next completed singles match was no. 4 singles.  Justin Saeian of BA knocked off USM’s Tommy Camilleri by a 6-4, 6-3 score.  Despite the loss, Trimble was heartened by what he saw in the match.  “Tommy finished a hard fought match, but Coach Buckley and I feel he has great potential for a freshman.”

Trimble continued, “The last two matches were tough three setters. Ty Parks pulled out a tremendous win over Chris Conley, and Sam Walker fought off three to four set points to lose a close match to Matt McGowan.” Parks beat Conley, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 in no. 2 singles.  In no. 1 singles, McGowan beat Walker 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The Wildcats won all the afternoon’s doubles matches. Playing together for the first time, Rishi Karri and Brent Mackman swept past BA’s Luke Cattani and Peter Francis, 6-0, 6-0 in no. 1 doubles.  In the no. 2 doubles match, USM’s Topher McGee and Andrew Stewart defeated Dylan Bissonette and Jack Eimerman, 6-3, 6-4; and in no. 3 doubles play, Ethan Ardern and Adam Salaymeh of USM stopped BA’s Anmar Omari and Danny Trunzo, 6-0, 6-4.

After all three doubles matches went to the Wildcats. “One doubles breezed through their match playing great tennis especially for their first time playing together. Two and three won, but had to work for it at times," Trimble said.

Trimble looked ahead to USM’s next match. “We have a lot of work to do to get ready for Tremper.”  It will be a big match between two tennis powers. The Wildcats, currently ranked first in the state in Division II, host Kenosha Tremper, ranked eighth in the state in Division I, at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
