The Health Department and a group seeking to educate youths on drug abuse recently won a federal grant to continue their work.

FRANKLIN, WI — A community group that seeks to fight drug misuse alongside the Franklin Health Department was recently awarded federal cash to continue its efforts in preventing drug abuse.

Volition Franklin, along with the Health Department, recieved the federal Drug Free Communities Grant on Sept. 21, according to a news release from the awardees. With news of the $625,000 grant, the two groups were able to ensure $1.25 million of funding for projects over the next five years, the news release said.

Volition Franklin was formed in 2010. It started with a few members leading small campaigns, the news release said, but the group has since evolved into a community name partnered with the Franklin Health Department.

"To receive this funding means support and recognition from those leading the charge for
substance misuse prevention within our nation,” said Ellen Henry, coordinator for the Health Department-Volition coalition.

The group says it uses strategies and education in an effort to prevent alcohol, tobacco and drug use among youth. According to Volition's website, educating young people to make informed decisions is key. The group engages with parents and youth through community events.

The group’s work is a strong asset to our entire community."
