Puppy Stuck In Fence Saved By Franklin Fire Department

Franklin Fire 'Week in Review': The department had to safely remove a puppy with its head stuck in a fence between responding to fires.

FRANKLIN, WI — The Franklin Fire Department rescued a puppy that was stuck in a fence, responded to multiple fire alarms, and announced that the department is looking for new recruits, according to its latest Week in Review.

The department's Station 113 responded to a call from Southland Drive on July 21. Upon arriving, firefighters found a German shepherd puppy with its head stuck in the rails of a steel dog gate. The department employed its hydraulic spreader and carefully removed the puppy from the steel fence's grasp. The "curious canine" was reunited with its owner soon after, according to the department's week in review.

The day prior to the puppy getting stuck was a busy one for the department. On July 20, the department received a call to a fire alarm at the Ascension Hospital on 27th Street and a call to a reported structure fire in the 7300 block of Williams Court — Both calls came in at the same time, taxing the department's resources, according to the week in review.

Neighboring firefighters from Greenfield, Oak Creek, Milwaukee and West Allis were called in to assist with. Firefighters discovered the hospital was a false alarm, but found a clothes dryer fire in Williams Court. The fire was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported, according to the week in review. Damage was estimated at $7500 for the dryer fire.

The department is also looking for new firefighters and paramedics. According to the week in review, there are several firefighter and paramedic vacancies needing to be filled. Applicants must be at least 18-years-old in peak health, and must hold a Firefighter II certification, WI EMT-Paramedic license and National Registry Paramedic certification.
