Known for its edgy performance choices and next-to-professional production value and talent, Greendale Community Theatre has captivated audiences since 2003 with productions like Avenue Q, Hairspray, Aida and the local premiere of RENT. After 16 years on Broadway and a 2012 Academy Award winning motion picture adaptation, GCT is proud to present the local premiere of the musical Les Misérables. “When we first started the theatre and were discussing what shows we could do, we mentioned Les Misérables as a joke, thinking that we could never do a show that was so huge an epic,” said Brian Bzdawka, GCT’s Artistic Director. “Now, for our 10th anniversary show, our little joke is coming true.”
And while GCT has always worked with some of the best and brightest theatrical talent in southeast Wisconsin, the turnout at Les Misérables auditions proved that this show would be a phenomenon different from all the rest with actors from all over Wisconsin and even Illinois seeking the coveted, career-defining roles.
“We had more than three times as many actors as usual audition for this show,” said Tom Reifenberg, Musical Director for GCT. “The talent was truly overwhelming. The entire cast is comprised of lead-quality actors.” Bzdawka and Reifenberg feel fortunate to have actors that just want to be in their shows, no matter what the role. “I get goosebumps in rehearsal every night,” Bzdawka said. “This is going to be big. Really big.”
An affiliate of the Greendale Park and Recreation Department, Greendale Community Theatre is proud to be at the leading edge of producing contemporary musical theatre and encourages their cast, crew and patrons to be responsible active members of a strong community. In an effort to redefine “community” theatre in Milwaukee, it has become a tradition to select a charity for “pass the hat” donations after each show. The selected charity for GCT’s Les Misérables is the Hunger Task Force.
